Artsmark Gold Award 'You clearly value the Arts and recognise their contribution to your mission statement of 'Building Character, Learning Together' at South Hill Primary School. You have used your Artsmark journey to develop children's understanding of arts and artists from a wider variety of different cultural heritages, so that cultural diversity is being promoted through your arts curriculum and your annual International Day. Music is a growing strength within your overall arts offer with lessons provided by a specialist music teacher. Your partnership with Hertfordshire Music Service is providing opportunities for children in Key Stage 2 to participate in instrumental tuition, including ukulele and Djembe drumming. Pupils can also participate in Choir extra-curricular club and have opportunities to showcase and celebrate their musical achievements locally and at national events, such as at Young Voices. Astutely, you have capitalised on the skills and expertise of various school stakeholders, including a parent who is an animator. This opportunity, along with the chance for children to see a range of artists and makers at work at the Dacorum Arts Centre, has enabled pupils to develop an understanding of carer pathways and job opportunities in the Arts. Remembrance Day at South Hill School Each year at South Hill School, we commemorate Remembrance day. We gather outside as a whole school community and Year 6 share poems inspired by the poem, 'In Flanders Field,' by John McCrae. Our South Hill School Choir sing a song dedicated to those who have fallen. We have a whole school homework project such as 'Jar decorating.' A pupil plays, 'The Last post' and leads us into a two minute silence. The eldest and youngest members of the school then join the Headteacher in placing poppy wreaths under our South Hill Flagpole. We then sing the National Anthem. It is a very special moment in memory of those who have lost their lives in war across the world.

Design and Technology Design and Technology Vision To develop pupils' skills and technical knowledge in designing, making and evaluating through cooking and nutrition, textiles, materials and construction. We teach a broad and varied Design and Technology curriculum, at South Hill, which aims to develop skills and knowledge through the following key areas: Design: We want our pupils to generate ideas and to model and communicate these through talking and drawing. We want them to create templates and design products that are appealing, functional and purposeful. Make: We want pupils to select from a range of materials, tools and equipment and use these to perform practical tasks such as cutting, shaping, joining, sewing, kneading and finishing. Evaluate: We want pupils to be able to talk about existing products, as well as their finished product, to compare these against the design criteria and to consider the views of others to improve their work. Technical Knowledge: We want pupils to know and use subject specific vocabulary (such as levers, sliders, wheels, axels) and to deepen their knowledge of technical processes such as how structures can be made stronger/more stable. Golden Threads As part of our Design and Technology curriculum, we have carefully mapped out Golden Threads that weave in and out of our learning. These allow us to build on previous knowledge and skills and to ensure a progression of these year after year. Our Golden Threads for DT are: Our Curriculum In EYFS, through the Early Learning Goal ‘Expressive Arts and Design’, pupils are introduced to the building blocks of our Design and Technology curriculum. Through construction, pupils explore and build with a variety of materials such as Lego or wooden bricks, alongside developing their fine motor skills with scissors, paper and other media. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop an understanding of the design, making and evaluating process when creating their own products. Examples of topics covered in KS1 include: Designing a building for a town, making a pop up toy and making a fruit/vegetable monster. In Key Stage 2, pupils further embed the design, make and evaluate cycle when creating their own products. Examples of topics covered in KS1 include: building Anderson Shelters, making Torches, making a hydraulic bridge and cooking Viking bread. By the end of Year 6, we want pupils to be able to have developed the ability to design and make a range of products (in cooking and nutrition, textiles, materials and construction) and to be confident in their technical knowledge of these areas and to be able to evaluate their own work, as well of as that of others. Whiz, Wham, Alakazam In the Spring term, Year 4 put on an amazing production of 'Whiz, wham, alakazam.' The play follows the story of the Sun Wizards inside Sun Castle: a busy, bustling, magical place, where wizards of every race, creed, colour and temperament live and work happily together. . But when the sun suddenly goes out, and the Ice Creatures begin to surface, they realise that they are facing a challenge of life-changing proportions. Can they put aside their differences and work together? Will they recognise that everybody has an important part to play? Are they prepared to listen to the right people, or merely to those with the loudest voices? The whole year group worked extremely hard over a number of weeks choreographing a range of superb group dances alongside developing their incredible acting and singing skills. They worked as a team to put on a superb show for the rest of the school, family and friends and we are so proud of each and every one of them.

Σε αυτήν τη σελίδα, θα σας ενημερώσουμε σχετικά με τη δουλειά που κάνουμε και πώς ενθαρρύνουμε το υπόλοιπο σχολείο να γίνει πιο φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον. Έχουμε ήδη κερδίσει το βραβείο Silver και τώρα εργαζόμαστε για το βραβείο Gold. Το να είμαστε Eco Warrior δίνει στους μαθητές μας την ευκαιρία να βοηθήσουν το σχολείο μας να γίνει πιο φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον. Έχουμε Eco Warriors τόσο στο KS1 όσο και στο KS2 και θέλουν να προωθήσουν φιλικές προς το περιβάλλον ιδέες και εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας σε ολόκληρο το σχολείο παρακολουθώντας τη χρήση ενέργειας στο σχολείο και ενθαρρύνοντας τους δασκάλους και τους μαθητές να ανακυκλώσουν. Κάθε μαθητής μπορεί να γίνει Eco Warrior στο South Hill School. Τον Σεπτέμβριο, ζητάμε από όσους ενδιαφέρονται να υποβάλουν αίτηση (μπορεί να είναι αφίσα, ποίημα ή μοντέλο κ.λπ.). Art Art Vision To progress pupils' skills and creativity in drawing, painting, collage, 3D art, textiles, printing, use of IT, sketchbooks and knowledge and for them to understand that this is the process of making art. Curriculum At South Hill, we want to inspire all of our pupils to experiment with art, to see it as an expression of self/mood and to take ownership of their work. Through the use of sketch books, pupils are encouraged to evaluate, experiment and work creatively to ensure they have a freedom of expression in the subject. In EYFS, pupils are introduced to the building the blocks of art through the key learning area ‘Expressive arts and Design’. In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, pupil’s skills and knowl edge are developed through our golden threads, which progress throughout the school and allow us to build on previous knowledge and to make links between what we have already learnt and what we are learning now and in the future: We study a wide variety of a rtists and learn many artistic techniques. For example: In EYFS, pupils experiment with collage based on the work of Matisse In Year 1, pupils study close ups of flowers inspired by Georgia O’Keefe In Year 2, pupils print with leaves in the style of Andy Warhol In Year 3, pupils draw with pencil and charcoal in the style of Quentin Blake In Year 4, pupils research and recreate the work of Watercolour artist Adrienne Pavelka In Year 5, pupils study the history of sculpting to create an Egyptian decorated scarab beetle In Year 6, pupils learn to create a World War 2 landscape print in the style of Paul Nash . Arts Mark Gold and local links South Hill have been awarded Gold in the ‘Arts Mark’ to reflect ‘…children's understanding of arts and artists from a wider variety of different cultural heritages, so that cultural diversity is being promoted through your arts curriculum…’. We also have a strong link with our local secondary school and a local private school, who run workshops with Upper Key Stage 2 pupils every year to extend pupil’s skill development. Whole School Art Gallery We run an annual art week, where as a school we work with one topic or theme (for example ‘Patterns in Nature’). We explore different skills and styles and produce a final piece of art. This art work is then displayed in a whole school art gallery to which parents are invited to view with their children. Parents can purchase their children’s work, treating the event as a true art gallery. Art competitions We encourage children from EYFS up to Year 6 to take part in art competitions, run and judged both in house and by external companies. For example, we have entered the ‘Dacorum Young Artist’ competition and the ‘CPRE Art’ competition. As a school, we celebrate all who enter, by displaying all entries in assembly and awarding certificates and house points. Sports Day at South Hill School At South Hill School, our sports day is a fun day for all our pupils. The day begins with EYFS and KS1 meeting on the school field for a carousel of activities. Mr Brathwaite DJs the event and really energises the children as they compete in their houses to get as many points as they can on each activity. Some of these activities are hurdles, javelin, obstacles and dribbling. Our Year six children always help and some activities are run by our year six sports ambassadors! When the carousel is finished, the children then take part in races - again aiming to win points for their houses. Our KS2 children then do the same in the afternoon, with some slightly different activities on the carousel and then ending with their races. Parents are invited to watch and support their children on sports day. They watch from the hillside overlooking the field or from the shade of the daily mile track. It truly is a memorable day!

Forest School ‘Forest School’ is a Scandinavian concept where the learning is outdoor based. Many forest school activities evolve from the children’s interests, ideas, and the natural resources found in our grounds. The outdoor sessions promote confidence, self-esteem and independence. At South Hill, we are passionate about developing the whole child and in using our amazing grounds to enhance learning. Benefits of forest school sessions include increased confidence, improved behaviour, improved concentration, independence, and development of social, emotional and physical skills. Forest school is all about exploring and experiencing the natural world through practical activities. The children go outside in all weathers, exploring and learning from the seasons and environment changes. Natural resources stimulate creative thinking, problem solving and skill development, all in the guise of play. The children also learn to care for the environment and appreciate the seasonal changes, developing an empathy for wildlife. Most importantly, alongside the learning, the children have fun! We are delighted to be able to offer every child at South Hill the chance to participate in Forest School during the academic year. EYFS participate all year round, Years 5 and 6 Autumn term, Years 1 and 2 Spring term and Years 3 and 4 Summer term! KS2 Carol Service at St Johns Church Each year KS2 visit St John's Church for our carol service.it is a lovely occasion which gets us in the festive mood with our choir singing beautifully and hearing some soloists too. Parents and carers are invited and fill the church which makes this event one of the most popular in the school calendar. 'T he singing and the readings were lovely; the children all showed the school at its best. The atmosphere was truly festive'. Chair of Governors Some Year 3 pupils said: I liked singing in the church. It made me feel happy. I felt excited...the lights on the trees were lovely. I liked it when Jacob sang the solo. I liked Year 5 Silver Birch Jingle Bells song. I felt musical and excited. I enjoyed singing with choir.
