Calendar DSSN Toamna 2020 School Games Long Term Plan Subject Overview Active Lives Survey Community clubs We are extremely lucky to be close to so many great sporting clubs, who are willing and able to support our pupils and teachers. We have benefited from the coaching skills of Berkhamsted Hockey club, Leverstock Green tennis club, Bytomic Taekwondo, Christina Marks School of Performing Arts and Hertfordshire Cricket. The children have also been inspired by a visit from Victoria Ohuruogu - an English track athlete who won silver at the Commonwealth Games last year! We also book workshops for the children that support their physical and mental wellbeing. Challenge Sport Education have provided us with these a number of times and have been greatly enjoyed by the children. Running track Our extensive school grounds, includes a running track which is used by every year group each day. The children are encouraged to run or walk around the 300-metre long track in their break times, but also as healthy active breaks during lesson time. Once a half term, our sports coach sets an extra challenge, where children compete against other classes to run or walk as many laps as possible in a week. We understand that active children are often happy children so Friday is Daily Mile Friday for family to join in too! The side gate opens at 8:20am each Friday for families to run with their children before school. Orienteering course Our grounds has an orienteering course, which enables us to make some of our other lessons in the curriculum more active. Children can regularly be seen running happily from zone to zone to solve historical, geographical, mathematical and English facts. Clubs We offer a range of clubs at our school. • South Hill Art Exhibition | southhill

South Hill Art Exhibition At South Hill, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to explore and create art. We also believe that children should see their art displayed. This is the thinking behind our annual art week and Art Exhibition. Each year we have a theme, such as ‘Patterns in Nature’ or ‘Under the Sea’, and all year groups spend a week exploring the theme, looking at a particular style of art based on a specific artist. During the week, they learn about the artist, and practise different art forms such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography or collage, experimenting with different mediums and techniques. The end of the week sees them producing a final piece of art. The art is then mounted and displayed in our Art Gallery. Parents and children are invited in to view the work, which is available to be bought by the parents. Art works are numbered rather than named and information regarding the artist and the methods used to create the pieces are displayed alongside the works. The artwork is passed to them in the days following the gallery. This allows children the opportunity to visit an art gallery, see how a gallery works and to have the pleasure of seeing their work being viewed by others. It is always a very popular event both with our pupils and with their parents. It is well attended and provides much-needed funds for our art supplies. More importantly, it gives children the chance to see themselves as valued artists and promotes the subject through the school.

  • The South Hill Way | southhill

The South Hill Way At South Hill, we follow 'The South Hill Way', which forms part of our behaviour policy (following the Steps therapeutic behaviour approach). The 'SHW' is an important part of this and promotes our school values, 'The 4 R's'. These are linked to 'British Values' and underpin what it means to be both a pupil and an adult at South Hill. Theo in Year 3 says, “The South Hill Way are our 4 main school rules. They keep everyone safe and mean everyone is the same.” Ada in Year 1 says, “The South Hill Way helps us know what to do and means everyone is happy.” We want every pupil and every adult to embrace and display these values so that everyone can learn and achieve at our school because 'it's the South Hill Way.'

  • Forest School | southhill

Forest School ‘Forest School’ is a Scandinavian concept where the learning is outdoor based. Many forest school activities evolve from the children’s interests, ideas, and the natural resources found in our grounds. The outdoor sessions promote confidence, self-esteem and independence. At South Hill, we are passionate about developing the whole child and in using our amazing grounds to enhance learning. Benefits of forest school sessions include increased confidence, improved behaviour, improved concentration, independence, and development of social, emotional and physical skills. Forest school is all about exploring and experiencing the natural world through practical activities. The children go outside in all weathers, exploring and learning from the seasons and environment changes. Natural resources stimulate creative thinking, problem solving and skill development, all in the guise of play. The children also learn to care for the environment and appreciate the seasonal changes, developing an empathy for wildlife. Most importantly, alongside the learning, the children have fun! We are delighted to be able to offer every child at South Hill the chance to participate in Forest School during the academic year. • The Big Little Nativity | southhill

The Big Little Nativity Our Early Years production was called 'The Big Little Nativity'. The children took on speaking, acting and singing roles. The traditional nativity story was told through the performance. All the early years children learnt eight songs, complete with actions. The children were fantastic at performing and they were all very excited to have the opportunity to perform on stage to their families and the wider school. We are very proud of them all.

  • Picture News | southhill

Picture News At South Hill School, we utilise the Picture News of our PSHE lessons in Spring 1 and 2. In our first assembly of the week on a Monday morning, the pupils are introduced to the topic they will be following in 'Picture News' for their PSHE lessons. This week, we discovered that in 2025, pupils will be allowed to study British sign language as a GCSE. We thought about this key question; 'Should we learn sign language at school?' Sign Language in School Picture News for Parents So how can Picture News support our pupil’s understanding of PSHE? Picture News is a fantastic resource to help our school teach pupils about current affairs and what’s happening in the world by using real life learning. This facilitates them to develop respect for others whilst incorporating the technique of reflection. Furthermore, it allows pupils to learn about themselves and what interests them. This can then sparks their own imaginations, passions and what they want to change or act upon by voicing opinions and feelings about the topic. There are a number of related resources to facilitate this process such as; useful vocabulary, British Values, Protective Characteristics and on some occasions (if topic specific) the UN Convention of the Rights of the Pupils (UNCRC, 1989).
