Sports Day at South Hill School At South Hill School, our sports day is a fun day for all our pupils. The day begins with KS2 meeting on the school field for a carousel of activities. Mr Brathwaite DJs the event and really energises the children as they compete in their houses to get as many points as they can on each activity. Some of these activities are hurdles, javelin, obstacles and dribbling. Our Year six children always help and some activities are run by our year six sports ambassadors! When the carousel is finished, the children then take part in races - again aiming to win points for their houses. Our EYFS and KS1 children then do the same in the afternoon, with some slightly different activities on the carousel and then ending with their races. Parents are invited to watch and support their children on sports day. They watch from the hillside overlooking the field or from the shade of the daily mile track. It truly is a memorable day! Educație fizică (...) Suntem foarte norocoși să avem un site verde atât de minunat. Avem un teren de joc extins, marcat ca un teren oficial de fotbal de dimensiuni juniori și un teren rotund, precum și o pistă de atletism în sezonul sportiv corespunzător. Suprafața dură este utilizată ca teren de netball pentru antrenamente pe tot parcursul anului și meciuri în timpul Termenilor de toamnă și primăvară. Toți elevii au ocazia să ia parte la o varietate de activități în timpul lecțiilor lor din curriculum-ul național și oferim cluburi suplimentare în afara orelor de școală pe parcursul celor trei trimestre. Școala primară South Hill este o parte activă a rețelei sportive școlare Dacorum și beneficiază enorm de resursele și formarea oferite prin parteneriat. Calendar DSSN Toamna 2020 School Games Long Term Plan Subject Overview Community clubs We are extremely lucky to be close to so many great sporting clubs, who are willing and able to support our pupils and teachers. We have benefited from the coaching skills of Berkhamsted Hockey club, Leverstock Green tennis club, Bytomic Taekwondo and Hertfordshire Cricket. The children have also been inspired by a visit from Victoria Ohuruogu - an English track athlete who won silver at the Commonwealth Games! We also book workshops for the children that support their physical and mental wellbeing and are grateful to the local community who supply these for us. Running track Our extensive school grounds, includes a running track which is used by every year group each day. The children are encouraged to run or walk around the 300-metre long track in their break times, but also as healthy active breaks during lesson time. Once a half term, our sports coach sets an extra challenge, where children compete against other classes to run or walk as many laps as possible in a week. We understand that active children are often happy children. The side gate opens every morning for family daily mile everyday from 8:20-8:35 for all to enjoy. Orienteering course Our grounds has an orienteering course, which enables us to make some of our other lessons in the curriculum more active. Children can regularly be seen running happily from zone to zone to solve historical, geographical, mathematical and English facts. Clubs We offer a range of clubs at our school. Religious Education Religious Education Vision To develop knowledge of religion and worldview by answering enquiries through ‘Big Questions’. To respect similarities and differences between people and their cultures. To have the confidence to develop their own sense of identity, belonging and worldview. At South Hill we teach a broad and balanced RE curriculum, which aims to develop skills and knowledge that: •promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, social and mental development of pupils •prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life •promotes British values •promotes community cohesion (Education Act, 2006) •protects children from the risk of radicalisation, from whatever source (The Prevent duty – departmental advice for schools and childcare providers”, June 2015) Our Curriculum At South Hill, we follow a scheme, ‘Jigsaw RE’. Jigsaw RE is an enquiry-based scheme of work, covering the principal world faiths and humanism in a progressive way from EYFS to Year 6. In the early years, the learning is closely matched to Development Matters to contribute meaningfully to your child’s holistic development. Throughout all the enquiries, the children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is carefully considered. This is a comprehensive programme designed to develop empathy, critical thinking and understanding of diverse worldviews. It encompasses the Worldview approach to RE enabling pupils to form their own decisions about what RE means to them and develop their own personal worldview whilst empathising with what it means to other religious and non-religious belief holders. Appreciating that we all see the world through the lens that has been formed by our experiences, upbringing, culture etc and that this influences our decision-making and our own way of seeing the world is so valuable. It also aims to enable children to grow spiritually by developing their awareness and skills of reflection, their experience of awe and wonder and their appreciation of stillness and silence. Lessons are carefully mapped out in our ‘Long term plan’ and progress through our golden threads (the 6 principal religions as well as touching on Humanism in appropriate units). Long Term Plan Subject Overview Information for Parents The Big Question Each enquiry lasts for half a term and begins with a ‘big question’ such as “What is the best way for a Christian/Jew/Muslim etc. to show commitment to God?” The children then start discussing the theme of the enquiry (in this case, commitment) from their own experience. What have they shown commitment to? Brownies? Cubs? Their sporting team? Playing an instrument? Only when the children fully understand the concept they are considering, do they then move on to investigating what the people following the studied religion or worldview believe about it. They will spend approximately 3 lessons on this, learning in a variety of ways, so they can adapt their responses and come to a measured conclusion. In week 5 they will complete an activity which can assess their learning, by answering their “big” question. The assessment activities are child friendly and can be answered in a variety of ways, as long as the child can justify their view with the knowledge they have gained throughout the enquiry. This demonstrates the level of critical thinking that the children can apply – a valuable skill for them throughout the school curriculum. The final week in every enquiry gives the children time to reflect on what they have learnt about the concept and apply to it their own lives, thus allowing them to form their own beliefs and identity. For example, learning that Sikhs share their food with all who attend has taught me ……… about sharing that I would like to take forward with me. These lessons are often very creative, and children have opportunities to make items to express themselves in ways other than just writing. Owl Crew Each year group has a special owl from the Owl Crew. They represent wisdom and promote questioning and exploration. The owl will provide answers and challenge with further questions. By the end of Year 6, we want our pupils to: · Develop knowledge of world religions by asking ‘big questions.’ · Respect the similarities and differences between people and their cultures. · Have the confidence to develop their own sense of identity and belonging. Trips, hooks and theme days Our RE curriculum is enriched by a number of school trips, theme days and assemblies and these provide excellent opportunities to bring our learning to life. Examples are: · EYFS: Christmas visit to the local church to hang decorations. · Year 1: Celebration of Hannukah with parent visitors to explain their living and believing life. · Year 3: Theme day exploring Sikhism concluding with a shared Langar · Year 5: Visit to Gadebridge Park with the vicar linking the church to local history. · Whole school assemblies with Father Mike exploring Easter and Christmas International Day (please see the ‘International Day’ section of our website) Each year at South Hill School, we celebrate 'International Day'. Each class chooses a country from around the world, which is also representative of our South Hill communities. For that day, year groups investigate and learn about their chosen country. They can wear clothes from their celebrated country or colours of the flag. They experience the food, music, dance and interests of the people in that country. Pupils also explore the culture, traditions and beliefs of their chosen country. ‘I am Muslim and it means I go to London on Saturdays and Sundays to learn Arabic’ Adiyan. ‘I am Hindu and this means we celebrate Diwali which is coming soon. When you are Hindu you meet up with other Hindus and go to temple and wear special clothes’. Tulburare de joc Siguranță online South Hill Primary school recognises that internet, mobile and digital technologies provide positive opportunities for children and young people to learn, socialise and play but they also need to understand the challenges and risks. The digital world is an amazing place, but with few rules. It is vast and fast moving and young people’s future economic success may be partly dependent on their online skills and reputation. We are, therefore, committed to ensuring that pupils, staff and governors will be supported to use internet, mobile and digital technologies safely. This is part of our safeguarding responsibility. Staff are aware that some pupils may require additional support or teaching, including reminders, prompts and further explanation to reinforce their knowledge and understanding of online safety issues. We are also committed to ensuring that all those who work with children and young people, including their parents/carers, are informed about the ever-changing risks so that they can take an active part in helping children and young people navigate the online world safely and confidently. Staff have an annual online safety review, with parents and carers receiving monthly online safety tips in the school newsletter. We currently use the document ‘Education for a Connected World’ and resources from Project Evolve to plan and implement our half termly online safety sessions across the school (EYFS to Year 6). Each term, delivers a different aspect of online safety with bespoke sessions adopted when required, see the long term plan for details of our curriculum. We are also lucky to have a team of Digital Leaders at South Hill, whose role it to promote online safety and share their love of all things digital! All digital leaders have to apply for their role and are shortlisted and interviewed by the previous year’s Digital Leader team. Early Years Foundation Stage Early Years Vision Children in Early Years are valued as unique individuals. The stimulating environment is enhanced to reflect their interests. Our Early Years provision develops the building blocks in learning in preparation for Year 1. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is how the Government and Early Years professionals describe the educational stage in your child’s life between birth and the age of five. Reception is the final year of this stage. This is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for the next stage of school as well as preparing them for future learning and successes. There are four guiding principles which shape practice in the Early Years at South Hill. These are: • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers. • Children develop and learn at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The three prime areas are most essential for building your child’s capacity for learning and ensuring that they are able to thrive.
