Remembrance Day at South Hill School Each year at South Hill School, we commemorate Remembrance day. We gather outside as a whole school community and Year 6 share poems inspired by the poem, 'In Flanders Field,' by John McCrae. Our South Hill School Choir sing a song dedicated to those who have fallen. We have a whole school homework project such as 'Jar decorating.' A pupil plays, 'The Last post' and leads us into a two minute silence. The eldest and youngest members of the school then join the Headteacher in placing poppy wreaths under our South Hill Flagpole. We then sing the National Anthem. It is a very special moment in memory of those who have lost their lives in war across the world.

We have benefited from the coaching skills of Berkhamsted Hockey club, Leverstock Green tennis club, Bytomic Taekwondo, Christina Marks School of Performing Arts and Hertfordshire Cricket. The children have also been inspired by a visit from Victoria Ohuruogu - an English track athlete who won silver at the Commonwealth Games last year! We also book workshops for the children that support their physical and mental wellbeing. Challenge Sport Education have provided us with these a number of times and have been greatly enjoyed by the children. Running track Our extensive school grounds, includes a running track which is used by every year group each day. The children are encouraged to run or walk around the 300-metre long track in their break times, but also as healthy active breaks during lesson time. Once a half term, our sports coach sets an extra challenge, where children compete against other classes to run or walk as many laps as possible in a week. We understand that active children are often happy children so Friday is Daily Mile Friday for family to join in too! The side gate opens at 8:20am each Friday for families to run with their children before school. Orienteering course Our grounds has an orienteering course, which enables us to make some of our other lessons in the curriculum more active. Children can regularly be seen running happily from zone to zone to solve historical, geographical, mathematical and English facts. Clubs We offer a range of clubs at our school. Lunch Zone Lunches are provided by HCL, our catering providers. More information about them can be found here. Fresh meals are cooking on the premises each day. There is a choice of three meals. International Day Each year at South Hill School, we celebrate 'International Day'. Each year group represents a country from around the world which is also representative of our South Hill communities. For that day, year groups represent and learn more about their chosen country and can wear traditional clothing from their celebrated country or colours of the flag. All pupils learn about the geography of their chosen country and where to locate the country on a map, what continent the country is part of and what countries are nearby, we might learn about famous buildings and landmarks.   For PE, we are lucky to have Don Rae Academy join us to teach traditional dances from each country. Make sure you come in and watch our fantastic performances in the afternoon!   For MFL (Modern Foreign Language), all year groups learn a few key phrases and words. We also focus on learning a traditional song!   All year groups have the opportunity to taste food originating from that country. Some year groups complete a food tasting activity while other year groups make the traditional food themselves. Some year groups look at the religion and the history of their chosen country, focusing on some significant people from that country and how the country has possibly changed over time. The countries remain the same each year, ensuring that our children gain a rich understanding of different cultures and traditions from all over the world. The countries represented are: Reception- Bangladesh Year 1- Poland Year 2- India Year 3- Romania Year 4- Portugal Year 5- Turkey Year 6- Ghana "I wanted to pass on my thanks to the staff who made today (international day) at school so special. My son came home very happy and inspired by the country (and food!) of Bangladesh.
