Art Art Vision To progress pupils' skills and creativity in drawing, painting, collage, 3D art, textiles, printing, use of IT, sketchbooks and knowledge and for them to understand that this is the process of making art. Curriculum At South Hill, we want to inspire all of our pupils to experiment with art, to see it as an expression of self/mood and to take ownership of their work. Through the use of sketch books, pupils are encouraged to evaluate, experiment and work creatively to ensure they have a freedom of expression in the subject. In EYFS, pupils are introduced to the building the blocks of art through the key learning area ‘Expressive arts and Design’. In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, pupil’s skills and knowl edge are developed through our golden threads, which progress throughout the school and allow us to build on previous knowledge and to make links between what we have already learnt and what we are learning now and in the future: We study a wide variety of a rtists and learn many artistic techniques. We also have a strong link with our local secondary school and a local private school, who run workshops with Upper Key Stage 2 pupils every year to extend pupil’s skill development. Whole School Art Gallery We run an annual art week, where as a school we work with one topic or theme (for example ‘Patterns in Nature’). We explore different skills and styles and produce a final piece of art. This art work is then displayed in a whole school art gallery to which parents are invited to view with their children. Parents can purchase their children’s work, treating the event as a true art gallery. Art competitions We encourage children from EYFS up to Year 6 to take part in art competitions, run and judged both in house and by external companies. For example, we have entered the ‘Dacorum Young Artist’ competition and the ‘CPRE Art’ competition. Our Curriculum At South Hill School, our curriculum allows our pupils to flourish through a nurturing environment, which aims to build confident and resilient learners and provide the building blocks of learning in all subjects, in preparation for their next steps across our school and to secondary school. Our Curriculum Intent The intent of our school curriculum is clearly planned and developed using a progressive approach with a build-up of learning, knowledge and skills. This is m apped out from year group to year group, and across key stages, via our ‘subject long term planning documents’ and ‘year group curriculum overviews’, which follow the National Curriculum. We have aimed to design an ambitious curriculum which is designed for the pupils at our school and a curriculum that is relevant and meaningful. The core of our curriculum is based on developing pupils' Reading, Writing and Maths skills and providing a rich, diverse learning experience. We focus on a strong 'daily diet' of learning for all pupils. Our Reading curriculum follows the Read Write Inc scheme to teach phonics and reading skills in a consistent manner. The Angel That Nearly Missed It All Despite their best efforts, one forgetful angel is always late! They oversleep, their maps blows away, they go to the wrong hillside, they gets cramp in their wings, and they terrify the donkeys. Will this Late Angel eventually make it to meet Mary and Joseph, and help the rest of the Angel Chorus celebrate the most important event of all? A wonderful production by our key stage 1 pupils with lovely singing, dancing and acting. Thank you to all the KS1 team for the amazing job they have done on preparing Yrs 1&2 for this year’s Nativity. The children did an absolutely brilliant job. We feel fortunate to have a school which celebrates non-academic performances as highly as it feels like South Hill does and puts in huge amounts of effort to these endeavours, it is lovely they have the opportunity to work towards events such as these too. Safeguarding in the Curriculum at South Hill School Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do here at South Hill School. Great importance is placed on identifying opportunities in the taught curriculum for children to learn about safeguarding. Our broad curriculum gives pupils opportunities to experience life in all its diversity, to acquire knowledge, understanding, and skills that significantly impact personal development, behaviour, and welfare. It also equips our pupils with the knowledge and skills required for personal safeguarding. Our PSHE curriculum covers aspects of safeguarding which are appropriate to the child’s age.
